Running Resources

Here are a few resources I have found useful when building out my running practice and staying healthy.

Obviously, there are countless other ways to arrive at the same — or similar — insights, and this is by no means a comprehensive collection. It’s really just a teaser.

Feel free to browse and perhaps you glimpse something that is useful to you.

Community & Racing

There are quite a few organizations that convene the running community and coordinate races — whether for profit, or for non-profit purposes. Here are just a few of organizations and clubs I have come across in Vienna and in DC.

The sage advice of many fellow runners is that it pays off to be in a community if you want to practice running seriously. I tend to agree for the many obvious benefits community is good for. Needless to say this is primarily a time constraints and prioritization question.

Gear & Gadgets

I am big on Garmin and a number of friends have switched over from either Polar or Apple to Garmin in recent years. But hey… whatever works for you!

While I have worn a heart rate strap and a running pod in the past — at least on and off — my sense is that current running watches do a pretty decent job of keeping track of HR fundamentals, save perhaps if you are serious triathlete and half the time emerged in water.

There are a number of apps that integrate well with Garmin for both fundamentals and community, for example Strava, MyFitnessPal or Apple Health. At some point I wanted a great micronutrient tracker and after some testing I settled on MacroFactor. The app is time consuming — but works pretty well. Unfortunately it only integrates with Apple Health for now. Fine.
